Heights Speed Traps

The Houston Press recently listed the Top 10 Speed Traps in Houston. Two of these are in the Heights, and one nearby.

My personal favorite speed trap, where I’ve been caught once, and nearly caught on several occasions is on Durham, heading south from 11th St to I-10. You just sail over the bridge down to the intersection with I-10. “Damn..there he is again!” You would think I would learn, but no, it’s like the first time, every time. They are also on the other side (Shepherd) coming back to 11th, but I don’t normally go back that way. Friday is reportedly therir favorite day.

The second location is TC Jester Blvd, heading south to I-10. Both of the two bridges  over the rail yard and the bayou are favorite haunts of the radar cops. There is something about sailing over a bridge, knowing that there are no cross streets that just quickens your speed. I think it should be allowed, but the police obviously don’t agree.

There are two bridges going over the bayou and the railroad yards in this area (you can expect the other in this list as well) and both are targeted by police looking to bust people coming down the other side too quickly. In this case, it is almost always on the southbound side heading towards Interstate 10.

A third speed trap close enough to the Heights to mention is Silber at I-10. This whole complicated area of merging lanes seems to be another favorite place for radar cops. They have these sexy looking grayed-out Camaros with no obvious flashing lights.

We know to drive with care; we don’t always know the speed limit. Knowing these locations though is a reminder. Good luck!
